What is a Chimera?

Ever Wonder About Advances in Human Organ Research?. Dr. Elaine Cox, the medical director of infection prevention at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, writes in an opinion piece in U.S. News & World Report (2/28, Cox, 1.02M) that human-animal hybrids known as chimeras could help cut the organ waiting list by increasing the supply of organs, but the development of such hybrids also raises ethical concerns. Cox argues that chimeras could be a feasible solution for the long waiting lists for organs, but points out that the National Institutes of Health has imposed a moratorium on funding such research in large part because of ethical concerns.
