llumina announced a new line of instruments capable of bringing down the average time of sequencing a human genome to one hour. The new technology “is expected to reduce the cost of sequencing to $100 per human genome” in as little as ten years, according to Illumina CEO Francis DeSouza as quoted in the San Diego Union Tribune. This brings the opportunity for all of us to be more able to afford genomic testing that may help guide our personal healthcare diagnosis and treatment decisions. But a lot more research is needed to help identify what those test results mean. Having genomic test results more quickly will help accelerate that knowledge and clinical usefulness of precision medicine research.
